How to fine tune the link test

VSE Link Tester offers a variety of fine-tuning options so that you can test the links on your web page even faster and more effective.

You can access these fine tuning options in the "Edit Link" window by double-clicking a link in the main window or by pressing the "Edit Link..." button in the main window.

The "General" panel

URL
The URL edit field allows you to enter the URL of your web page. VSE Link Tester will start the link test on the URL that is entered there. You can enter a remote web site URL (http://) or a local web site link (file://).

If you want to test a local web page, the link will be automatically entered when you drag a web page onto VSE Link Tester.

Follow links recursively
Select this option if all links of your web site should be tested. Deselect this option if only the links on the first web page should be tested.

If that option is selected, VSE Link Tester will follow all links within your web pages and it will test all web pages within your domain.

Note that the Standard version of VSE Link Tester will test up to 20 web pages on your web site and the Business version will test an unlimited number of web pages.

Show duplicate errors
Select this option if you want VSE Link Tester to show an error message when the same broken URL is found but called from a different web page or from a different place within the same web page. Normally, this option should be selected.

The "Remote Links" panel

Ignore Remote Links
Select this option if you only want to test links that are on your hard disk. This option allows you to test local links without getting unwanted information.

If you have a dial-up connection to the Internet, select this option to test your web site without connecting to the Internet. Remote links are links that start with "http://".

Timeout after X seconds
Sometimes a web server does not answer when an URL is requested. You can enter a time period here after that VSE Link Tester should give up.

Test delay
Allows you to set a delay so that VSE Link Tester waits some time until it tests the next link on your web site. The less the delay, the faster is the link test and the less responsive is your server for outside tasks while VSE Link Tester is testing your links.

Timeout after X seconds
Sometimes a web server does not answer when an URL is requested. You can enter a time period here after that VSE Link Tester should give up.

Maximum number of concurrent connections
Allows you to determine how many links should be tested simultaneously. If you have a speedy Internet connection, you can select a higher number. Otherwise, select a lower number.

The "Local links" panel

Ignore Local Links
Select this option if you only want to test remote links. Remote links are links that begin with "http://". Local links start with "file://". This option allows you to test remote links without getting unwanted information.

Local links are case-sensitive
Select this option to test if all local links on your hard disk have proper capitalization. This is important if your web server runs a UNIX system where capitalized file names matter.

File:/// maps to folder
When testing a web site on your hard disk, you must specifiy a folder to which a relative URL should map. Example: If the relative URL "/support.html" should map to "Hard Disk/Web Site/support.html", select the folder "Web Site" on your folder with the "Set" button.

Local links ending with a "/" are mapped to X
When VSE Link Tester finds a local folder URL, it extends the URL so that it points to a file with this name.

For example, when you enter "index.html", the local folder URL "file://mypage/" will be extended to "file://mypage/index.html".

The "Filter” panel

VSE Link Tester allows you to filter out special URL’s that should not be tested. For example, you can determine that your CGI directory should not be tested.

To do that, click the “Add” button and enter “ cgi” in the newly opened window. That’s all there is to it.

On some dynamically build web sites, it might trigger an action when a special link is visited. If you don't want that this action is performed during the link test, enter the link in question in the "Filter" panel.

The "Advanced” panel

Username and password
If your web site contains pages that require a username and a password, enter them in this panel. When VSE Link Tester encounters a page that requires authentification, it will automatically use the unsername and password you provided. Only one username and password can be used for the entire site.

User agent
If your web is customized for a specific web browser (tech talk: HTTP user agent), you can select that user agent in the popup menu. That makes sense if you have different web pages for Netscape Navigator, MS Internet Explorer or other web browsers.
